Virtualization Comes to Mobile Computing

Open Kernal Labs (OK Labs) wants to give solution providers that ability to segregate business and personal computing applications on smartphones and other mobile computing devices.

At the recent Mobile World Congress 2011 conference, OK Labs rolled out SecureIT Mobile Enterprise for Google Android devices and other open mobile computing devices.

According to OK Labs CEO Steve Subar, SecureIT Mobile Enterprise is based on the microvisor virtual machine technology that OK Labs originally developed for manufacturers of smartphones. This implementation, however, allows solution providers to directly install a virtual machine of Android smartphones and tablet PC devices.

This approach allows customers to create a virtual sandbox on these devices for running enterprise applications without having to intrude on the personal application space of the end user, said Subar.

As end users increasingly bring personal devices into the workplace, solution providers are being asked to come up with innovative approaches to securing these devices that give IT organizations a maximum amount of control without having to manage the personal applications of the end user.

The OK Labs approach accomplishes that by isolating the two environments, which Subar says is becoming easier to support as the processing power on mobile computing devices continues to increase exponentially.
