Transaction performance testing was done using a Spirent TestCenter 9000, equipped with an EDM-2003B 12-port GigE Dual Media Card. TestCenter Application Version 3.30 was used to create a single stream of UDP data over 12 GigE Ethernet ports.
IP throughput performance was test using Ixia’s IXChariot V7. Two Dell Optiplex GX745 PCs running Windows XP-SP2 were used as endpoints on the test bed, while a Lenovo T61p was used as the management endpoint for executing Ixia’s included performance scripts. The Dell Optiplex GX745 PCs were configured to perform using Ixia’s virtual NIC capabilities, creating a synthesized environment of 20 virtual NIC cards on each end point – each Virtual NIC had a unique IP address assigned.
All tests involving VPN performance used an Adtran 5305 VPN router as an endpoint for decryption of VPN traffic. The Adtran 5305 had AOS 17.06.01.00 installed. All devices were tested in an “out of the box” state, using manufacturer recommended configurations for a typical networking environment. Quick configuration or quick start wizards/tools were used where applicable.

All tests were performed at Adtran’s Huntsville quality assurance lab. The author performed testing independently using a mixture of equipment from Adtran and other vendor provider products. Ixia provided IXCariot V7 and technical assistance, as well as testing scripts/macros to the author.
Adtran was responsible for any costs related to travel, lab configuration or the purchase of additional equipment needed for testing. The author did not receive any loner equipment or retained ownership of any of the equipment from Adtran. Adtran was also responsible for any ancillary costs related to the product testing. The author was not directly compensated for the publication of this product analysis.
